It's kind of been a sucky week for me and my fellow coworkers at the hospital. Sure we deal with crappy things and situations all the time, it is a hospital, but when it involves a coworker, it just plain sucks. The worst part is, there's nothing that we can really do to help.
A wonderful coworker, teacher, friend and fellow John Wayne enthusiast of mine found out she has stage 4 colon cancer that has spread into her liver and kidneys. She had surgery on Friday the 13th to remove part of her colon, and will most likely start chemo therapy next week. However, chemo won't kill it all. The good news, if you can consider any of this good news, is that it has not spread to her lungs, but she's not sure if it's spread to her brain yet. I'm sure they'll do a CT or MRI of her brain soon to find out.
It was a day of tears for us coworkers yesterday as we heard of the outcome of the surgery. Stage 4. It just plain sucks. I'm sure we've all known someone or been related to someone that has been diagnosed or died of cancer. It just hasn't happened to me recently. My great-grandpa died of colon cancer, that and old age, but that was many years ago. One of my best friend's mothers was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which does not have a very good outcome, she's almost to her 5 year cancer free mark! It's amazing what the human body and mind is capable of.
I guess the only thing that I can do for her is to support her and her 18 year old daughter. Whether it's through prayer or the simple gesture of going and visiting her in the hospital to say hi and label everything in her room (She had a hay-day last spring when she brought her labeler and labeled everything in the department!), I can support her. I just can't help her.
I move for the motion to boycott cancer and everything related to cancer that has a negative connotation. All those in favor say 'aye.'
